The Fayette R-III School District has placed a levy increase initiative on the April 2, 2019, ballot, not to be confused with the "no tax increase" bond issue that was on the April 2018 ballot.
A district runs a bond issue when needing to make capital improvements whereas it runs a tax levy to fund operating expenses like salaries, utilies, and textbooks.
The district ran no tax increase bond issues in 2018, 2013, 2012, 2008, and 2005.
The only levy increase requested was in August 1999, which passed for $0.32.
The current operating levy is: $3.5000 The current debt service levy is: $0.7762 The total levy is: $4.2762
The proposed levy increase is $0.72, which brings the operating levy to a total of $4.2200 and the total levy to $4.9962.
The district is facing a shortfall in revenue to cover operating expenses as a result of (1) increasing operating costs, (2) declining enrollment, (3) decreasing state and federal funding, and (4) underfunded mandatory programs.
